Surron Ultra Bee Range: 8 Honest Facts About the 115 km Claim

Surron Ultra Bee Range: 8 Honest Facts About the 115 km Claim

Sur-Ron quotes the Surron Ultra Bee range at up to 115 km (71.5 miles) from the HP’s 74 V 60 Ah battery. That number is real, but it is measured at a steady 31 mph on a flat surface – which is not how anyone rides an Ultra Bee. This guide explains what the pack actually delivers on trails and tracks, in Turbo and in Eco, in summer and in winter, and how to get the most out of it, from the dealer that sells, inspects and services the bike in Coalville, Leicestershire.

Figures are Sur-Ron UK’s MY26 specification; the Ultra Bee HP product page has the full sheet.

Fact 1: where the 115 km Surron Ultra Bee range figure comes from

The quoted figure is a constant-speed test: 31 mph (50 km/h) on a flat, firm surface with a rider of average weight, in a moderate power mode. It is a fair way to compare bikes – every manufacturer quotes something similar – but it strips out the three things that use most of an Ultra Bee’s energy: acceleration, gradient and speed above 31 mph. Think of 115 km as the ceiling, not the forecast.

Fact 2: what the Surron Ultra Bee range looks like in the real world

From our own riding and from customers who track their bikes through the app, these are the brackets we see. They are rough, and your weight, terrain and right wrist will move them, but they are far more useful than a single number.

How you rideTypical Surron Ultra Bee rangeNotes
Steady 31 mph on firm, flat ground100–115 kmThe test condition; rarely how anyone rides
Green lanes and gentle trails, mid modes70–90 kmA full day out for most riders
Mixed trail riding with climbs, Sport mode45–70 kmThree to four hours of proper riding
Track sessions in Turbo30–45 kmStill a full afternoon in 20-minute sessions
Cold weather (below 5 °C), any of the aboveKnock 15–25% offLithium cells deliver less when cold

Even at the harsh end, the Ultra Bee outlasts the rider more often than the rider outlasts the Ultra Bee: a 45 km track day in Turbo is an exhausting afternoon on an 88.5 kg bike with 520 Nm.

Fact 3: power modes are the biggest lever

The HP has six selectable power modes plus Turbo. Turbo unlocks the full 24.5 kW and is glorious for short bursts; it is also the fastest way to empty the pack. Mode 3 or 4 gives most riders everything they need on a trail with a large range benefit, and the lowest modes turn the bike into a long-range green-laner. Switching modes is a button press, so ride the technical sections in a mid mode and save Turbo for the straights.

  • Turbo: maximum power, minimum range – use it in bursts.
  • Sport (21.5 kW): the everyday fast setting; expect the middle of the table above.
  • Mid modes: the best balance of pace and Surron Ultra Bee range for trail riding.
  • Low modes: gentle response, long range, ideal for new riders and long lanes.

Fact 4: energy recovery adds kilometres on descents

The HP has adjustable energy recovery: close the throttle and the motor brakes the bike, feeding charge back into the pack. On flat ground it makes little difference; on a long descent it is worth real kilometres and it saves the brake pads. Set it higher for hilly days and lower for loose ground, where a strong regen can unsettle the rear.

Fact 5: charging – 2.5 hours from 20% to 80%

The 1000 W charger stows on the bike and takes the 74 V 60 Ah pack from 20% to 80% in about 2.5 hours from a normal UK socket; the last 20% is slower, as on any lithium pack. A full charge costs well under a pound at domestic rates. Because the charger travels with the bike, a lunch stop with a socket can turn a 60 km day into a 100 km one.

Maintenance is minimal by design. Brake pads, chain tension, sprockets, tyres and a torque check are the whole routine, and our workshop will do an annual check while you wait if you would rather not. A charge of the 74 V 60 Ah battery takes about 2.5 hours from 20% to 80% and costs well under a pound.

Treat the battery like a phone you care about: room-temperature charging, no long periods completely flat, half charge for storage. Every Ultra Bee HP battery we have seen fail early had been left empty in a cold shed for months; every one that has been looked after is still going strong.

Fact 6: the HP T on the road

The road-legal HP T has the same battery and the same Surron Ultra Bee range, and road use – steady speeds, no climbs, no wheelspin – is the best case. A commute of 30 km each way with a charge at work is comfortable; a mixed day of road links and trails sits in the 60–80 km bracket. The T is an A1-class motorcycle: CBT from 17 with L-plates or a full licence, registration, insurance and £27 a year in tax.

Fact 7: ten ways to stretch the Surron Ultra Bee range

  1. Ride the mid modes and save Turbo for open ground.
  2. Set energy recovery higher on hilly days.
  3. Keep tyre pressures at the recommended figures; soft knobblies drag.
  4. Charge to 100% before a long day; store at around 50% otherwise.
  5. Keep the battery warm before a winter ride – bring it indoors the night before.
  6. Smooth throttle: every wheelspin is range thrown away.
  7. Carry the charger (it stows on the bike) and use lunch stops.
  8. Drop weight: luggage, a full toolkit and a heavy pack all count on an 88.5 kg bike.
  9. Check the chain and belt are clean and correctly tensioned.
  10. Use the app to watch consumption and learn what your riding costs.

Fact 8: Surron Ultra Bee range vs the rest of the range

The Ultra Bee has the largest battery in the line-up and the longest quoted range, but it is also the heaviest and most powerful bike, so the gap to a Light Bee is smaller on a track than on paper.

Surron E-Bikes is an authorised Sur-Ron dealer with a showroom and workshop in Coalville, Leicestershire, ten minutes off the M1. Every bike we sell is UK-supplied, pre-delivery inspected by our own technicians, and covered by a manufacturer warranty that is handled here rather than by posting parts abroad. We also carry one of the largest genuine Sur-Ron parts ranges in the country, so servicing and upgrades happen in one place.

We are also a third-party webshop that stocks selected products from other brands with their consent, which is why you will see more than one name in the catalogue. For the bikes themselves, though, the process is the same: one price, one workshop, one point of contact on WhatsApp or email.

Finding somewhere to ride is easier than it used to be. Search for motocross practice tracks and pay-and-play venues within an hour of you, phone to check they accept electric bikes and the rider’s age group, and ask about electric-only or youth sessions – many venues now run them because electric bikes solve their noise problem. Youth motocross clubs affiliated to the ACU are the other route, and club membership usually includes third-party cover.

Jargon, translated:

  • Energy recovery – regenerative braking that puts charge back into the battery on a closed throttle.
  • Certificate of conformity – the document needed to register a type-approved bike with the DVLA.
  • Grey import – a bike bought abroad and shipped privately, usually without a UK warranty.
  • L1e – the EU/UK moped vehicle class; the Light Bee L1E is type-approved in it.
  • EAPC – electrically assisted pedal cycle, the 250 W legal e-bike category the Sur-Ron range is not part of.
  • Ride modes – selectable power levels; Mode 1 is the gentlest.
  • Big Wheel / Small Wheel – the two Hyper Bee wheel formats, 14/12 and 12/10 inches.
  • PDI – pre-delivery inspection: the checks a dealer makes before the bike leaves.

Surron Ultra Bee range: questions we get asked

  • “Is the Surron Ultra Bee range better than a petrol 250 on a tank?” A 250 goes further on a tank, but the Ultra Bee refuels from a socket for pence and needs no fuel run.
  • “Does a heavier rider cut the Surron Ultra Bee range much?” Yes – on an 88.5 kg bike a 100 kg rider is a big share of the total mass. Expect 10–15% less than a 70 kg rider.
  • “Can I ride to the trail on the T and still have range for the trail?” Usually: 20 km of road each way plus 30 km of trail is inside the mid bracket.
  • “How do I check the battery’s health?” The app shows consumption; our workshop can do a full read-out.
  • “Does the app tell me remaining range?” It shows charge and ride data; remaining range depends on how you ride the next kilometre, so use the brackets in this guide.

If you are anywhere in the Midlands we are probably closer than you think: Coalville sits between Leicester and Burton, a few minutes off the M1 at junction 22. Come and compare the bikes side by side, ask the workshop anything, pick up parts and, if you decide to buy, take the bike away the same day if it is in stock. Contact us first so we can have the right colour on the floor.

  1. Read the ride-mode and battery sections of the manual – it takes ten minutes.
  2. Start in the lowest mode on open ground with no obstacles.
  3. Practise stopping: the front brake is powerful and the bike is light.
  4. Keep the first sessions short and finish before the rider is tired.
  5. Check the bolts after the first few rides; new bikes settle.

Surron Ultra Bee range: the short version

  1. 115 km is a steady-speed ceiling; 45–90 km is real trail riding.
  2. Modes are the biggest lever – save Turbo for bursts.
  3. Energy recovery adds kilometres on descents.
  4. 2.5 hours from 20% to 80% with the on-board charger; cold weather costs 15–25%.
  5. The HP T on the road is the best case for the Surron Ultra Bee range.

On hand-over – at the showroom or from the van – we show you how the battery locks in and lifts out, how the charger connects, how to switch ride modes, and where the serial numbers are. It takes ten minutes and it saves a lot of messages later. If the rider is there, we set the seat height and pick a starting mode with them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Surron Ultra Bee range?

Up to 115 km (71.5 miles) at a steady 31 mph from the 74 V 60 Ah battery. Real trail riding typically gives 45–90 km depending on mode, terrain and rider.

How far does the Ultra Bee go in Turbo?

On a track in Turbo, expect 30–45 km – still a full afternoon in sessions, but well under the quoted figure.

How long does the Ultra Bee take to charge?

About 2.5 hours from 20% to 80% with the 1000 W on-board charger from a normal socket; the last 20% is slower.

Does cold weather reduce the Surron Ultra Bee range?

Yes – expect 15–25% less below about 5 °C. Keep the battery indoors before a winter ride.

Does energy recovery make a difference?

On descents, yes – it adds real kilometres and saves brake pads. On flat ground the effect is small.

Is the HP T’s range the same as the X’s?

Same battery, same range; steady road riding is the best case for it.

How does the Ultra Bee range compare with the Light Bee?

Up to 115 km against 75 km quoted; on a track the gap narrows because the Ultra Bee is heavier and more powerful.

Can I carry a spare battery?

The 74 V 60 Ah pack is large and heavy; most riders carry the charger instead and top up at stops.

What is the Surron Ultra Bee range in winter?

Expect 15–25% less below about 5 °C. Keep the battery indoors the night before and warm it up gently in a low mode.

Does the Surron Ultra Bee range drop as the battery ages?

Slowly, if it is looked after; quickly if it is stored flat or charged frozen. Room-temperature charging and half-charge storage keep it healthy.

Up to 115 km on paper, 45–90 km in the real world, and a charger that travels with the bike – that is the Surron Ultra Bee range, honestly. See the Ultra Bee HP, or read our other guides.
