Ask anyone at a motocross track what electric bike to buy and the answer will be Surron – or Sur-Ron, depending on who is spelling it. In less than a decade the brand has gone from a curiosity to the default electric dirt bike, and in the UK it now outsells everything else in its class. These ten facts explain what a Surron is, why it works, what the range looks like for 2026 and how to buy one, from Surron E-Bikes in Coalville, Leicestershire.
Figures are Sur-Ron UK’s MY26 specification; prices are ours at the time of writing, and the bikes range shows live stock.

1. What a Surron is
A Surron is an electric off-road motorcycle built around three ideas: a forged aluminium frame that is far lighter than a petrol bike’s, a mid-mounted electric motor driving the rear wheel by chain, and a removable lithium battery you can carry indoors to charge. There is no clutch, no gearbox, no oil and no exhaust. The result is a bike that a teenager can lift, that makes almost no noise, and that pulls like a much bigger machine.

2. Surron or Sur-Ron?
The manufacturer writes it Sur-Ron. Almost everyone else writes Surron, because that is how it is said and how it is typed into a search box. They are the same thing; you will see both spellings on this site because customers use both. We are Surron E-Bikes, an authorised Sur-Ron dealer.
3. Where Surron comes from
Sur-Ron was founded in 2014 in China and launched the original Light Bee a few years later. It was the first electric dirt bike that was light, quick and cheap enough to sell in volume, and it created the category. The Storm Bee, Ultra Bee and Hyper Bee followed, and the 2026 range is the most complete yet: a junior bike, a full-size off-roader, a road-legal moped and a high-performance flagship. Bikes reach the UK through Sur-Ron’s official distribution, and Sur-Ron UK lists the dealer network.

5. The technology that makes a Surron work
- Forged aluminium frame: light, stiff and the reason a Light Bee weighs 59 kg.
- Mid-mounted motor: keeps the weight central; 8 kW on the Hyper Bee, 10 kW on the Light Bee, 24.5 kW on the Ultra Bee HP.
- Removable battery: 58 V, 72 V or 74 V lithium packs that charge from a household socket in two to two and a half hours (20–80%).
- No clutch, no gears: twist and go, which is why new riders learn so quickly.
- Ride modes: from a gentle beginner setting to full power, plus traction control and wheelie control on the newer bikes.
- Long-travel suspension: 170–240 mm of front travel depending on the model – real off-road bikes, not scooters.
6. Why riders love a Surron
Silence, first: a Surron can be ridden at venues and on land where a two-stroke would be banned, and neighbours never hear it leave. Weight, second: a bike you can pick up yourself changes how hard you are willing to ride it. Simplicity, third: no fuel, no oil, no jetting, no clutch cable. And pace: the Light Bee reaches 31 mph in 2.5 seconds and the Ultra Bee HP in 1.84 seconds, which embarrasses most petrol bikes twice the weight.
7. Surron and UK law
| Category | What it is | Law | Sur-Ron example |
|---|---|---|---|
| EAPC (e-bike) | Pedal-assist bicycle, 250 W, cuts out at 15.5 mph | No licence, tax or insurance; ride anywhere a bicycle can | None – Sur-Rons are not EAPCs |
| L1e moped | Type-approved two-wheeler limited to 45 km/h | Register, tax, insure; ride from 16 with a CBT | Light Bee L1E |
| L3e motorcycle (A1) | Type-approved motorcycle, 125-equivalent | Register, tax, insure; CBT from 17 or full licence | Ultra Bee HP T |
| Off-road e-moto | No type approval; private land and venues only | No licence, tax or registration; never on public land | Hyper Bee, Light Bee X, Ultra Bee HP X |
Before anything else: the Light Bee X is an off-road bike. It is not an e-bike in the pedal-assist sense (the legal definition is here), and it has no moped or motorcycle approval, so it cannot be plated. Ride it on private land with permission or at an off-road venue, never on the road, pavement, footpath, bridleway or in a public park.
Because it is a moped rather than a motorcycle, the licence bar is low: 16 years old, a provisional licence and a one-day CBT. There is no theory test and no practical test unless you want to remove the L-plates later. Riders with a car licence from before February 2001, or any full motorcycle licence, can ride it straight away.
8. What a Surron costs to buy and to run
With us the 2026 Hyper Bee is £2,995, the Light Bee X from £3,295, the L1E £4,499 and the Ultra Bee HP £5,999 (X) or £6,295 (T), including VAT, battery, charger, inspection and warranty. Running costs are pence per charge plus brake pads, a chain and tyres; road-legal models add £27 a year in tax and moped or A1-class insurance.
What it really costs to own a Light Bee X over a year, beyond the purchase price:
| Cost | Light Bee X |
|---|---|
| Bike | From £3,295 |
| Delivery / collection | £19.99 within 150 miles / free |
| Registration, tax, MOT | None – off-road only |
| Electricity per full charge | A few pence |
| Consumables per season | Pads, chain lube, occasionally a chain and sprockets |
| Optional off-road insurance | Typically well under £100 a year |
| Annual workshop check | Available while you wait |
Maintenance is minimal by design. Brake pads, chain tension, sprockets, tyres and a torque check are the whole routine, and our workshop will do an annual check while you wait if you would rather not. A charge of the 72 V 35 Ah battery takes about 2.15 hours from 20% to 80% and costs well under a pound.
Treat the battery like a phone you care about: room-temperature charging, no long periods completely flat, half charge for storage. Every Light Bee X battery we have seen fail early had been left empty in a cold shed for months; every one that has been looked after is still going strong.
9. Where to ride a Surron
Finding somewhere to ride is easier than it used to be. Search for motocross practice tracks and pay-and-play venues within an hour of you, phone to check they accept electric bikes and the rider’s age group, and ask about electric-only or youth sessions – many venues now run them because electric bikes solve their noise problem. Youth motocross clubs affiliated to the ACU are the other route, and club membership usually includes third-party cover.
- Off-road models: private land with permission, pay-and-play venues, practice tracks.
- Road-legal models: anywhere a moped or 125 can go, including green lanes that are legally roads.
- Nobody: parks, commons, footpaths, bridleways, byways or towpaths on an off-road bike.

10. How to buy a Surron in the UK
- Reserve the bike: add it to your basket on the Light Bee X page or send us a WhatsApp with the colour you are after.
- Choose how it reaches you: van delivery for £19.99 within 150 miles of Coalville, a quote further afield, or free showroom collection.
- Pay by bank transfer (details are emailed, never published) or by cryptocurrency.
- Within 24 hours we have inspected and charged the bike and confirmed a delivery or collection date with you.
A lot of customers reserve first and pay the rest later. Pay 50% by bank transfer or crypto, we take the bike off sale, and you clear the balance before delivery or collection – details are on our finance and reservations page. Message us before paying a deposit so we can confirm your colour is physically in stock.
Which Surron is right for you?
Tell us the rider’s height, whether the bike needs the road and how much pace they want – we answer in one message.
We are an authorised Sur-Ron dealer with a showroom and workshop in Coalville, Leicestershire, ten minutes off the M1. Every bike we sell is UK-supplied, pre-delivery inspected by our own technicians, and covered by a manufacturer warranty that is handled here rather than by posting parts abroad. We also carry one of the largest genuine Sur-Ron parts ranges in the country, so servicing and upgrades happen in one place.
We are also a third-party webshop that stocks selected products from other brands with their consent, which is why you will see more than one name in the catalogue. For the bikes themselves, though, the process is the same: one price, one workshop, one point of contact on WhatsApp or email.
The showroom and workshop are in Coalville, Leicestershire (LE67 2QE), ten minutes from junction 22 of the M1 and close to the M42, which puts Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Birmingham within forty minutes and London, Manchester, Sheffield and Bristol within about two hours. We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with parking outside the door. Book a visit and we will have the bike you are interested in ready to sit on.
Delivery day is short and practical. The driver unloads the bike, shows you the battery and charger, runs through the modes and leaves you the invoice with serial numbers. Photograph it and store the battery indoors that night – two habits that protect the bike and your insurance.

A few terms that come up in every conversation about these bikes:
- PDI – pre-delivery inspection: the checks a dealer makes before the bike leaves.
- Big Wheel / Small Wheel – the two Hyper Bee wheel formats, 14/12 and 12/10 inches.
- Ride modes – selectable power levels; Mode 1 is the gentlest.
- EAPC – electrically assisted pedal cycle, the 250 W legal e-bike category the Sur-Ron range is not part of.
- L1e – the EU/UK moped vehicle class; the Light Bee L1E is type-approved in it.
- Grey import – a bike bought abroad and shipped privately, usually without a UK warranty.
- Certificate of conformity – the document needed to register a type-approved bike with the DVLA.
- Energy recovery – regenerative braking that puts charge back into the battery on a closed throttle.
Surron questions we get asked
- “Is a Surron a motorbike or a bicycle?” A motorbike in law – it has no pedals and far more than 250 W.
- “How long does a Surron battery last?” Years, if it is charged indoors and never stored flat.
- “Can a Surron be ridden in the rain?” Yes. Rinse it afterwards and keep the battery indoors.
- “Is a Surron good for a beginner?” The Hyper Bee and the Light Bee X in Eco mode are; the Ultra Bee HP is not.
- “Where are Surron parts from?” Genuine parts come through Sur-Ron’s UK distribution; we stock them in Coalville.
And for the first ride:
- Charge the battery fully indoors and fit it until it clicks.
- Check tyre pressures, the chain tension and that both brakes bite firmly.
- Set the seat height so the rider can get a foot down, and select Mode 1.
- Ride slowly on flat ground first – the throttle is instant and there is no clutch to modulate it.
- Step up a mode only when the rider is bored of the current one, not before.
What to have ready before the bike arrives:
- Helmet, goggles, gloves and boots as the minimum, whatever the rider’s age.
- Body armour for anyone riding tracks or jumps.
- Somewhere secure and dry to store the bike, with the battery charged indoors.
- Landowner permission, in writing if it is not an obvious venue.
Surron: the short version
- A Surron is an electric off-road motorcycle: forged frame, mid motor, removable battery, no gears.
- Four 2026 bikes from £2,995 to £6,295; two are road legal.
- Ride off-road models on private land or at venues; register road models.
- Buy UK-spec from an authorised dealer; look after the battery.
Where do people actually ride? Three places, mostly: their own or a friend’s land, a pay-and-play venue, and a practice track or club. The first is free but needs permission; the second costs a day fee and provides marked routes and marshals; the third adds coaching and racing. Phone any venue before you go to confirm it takes electric bikes and the rider’s age.
