The Light Bee L1E 2026 is the Sur-Ron you can ride on the road: the same 10 kW, 72 V platform as the Light Bee X with lights, indicators, mirrors, a horn, a plate mount and L1e type approval. Register it, insure it and ride it from 16 with a CBT. This guide covers what it is, what changed for 2026, who can ride it, what registration involves and what it costs to own – from the dealer that sells and services them.
Figures are Sur-Ron UK’s MY26 specification and Surron E-Bikes’ prices at the time of writing; the product page has the live numbers.

1. What the Light Bee L1E 2026 is
Take a 2026 Light Bee X – forged aluminium frame, mid-mounted 10 kW motor, 295 Nm, 72 V 35 Ah removable battery – and add everything the law requires for a moped: LED headlight, tail and brake light, indicators, mirrors, a horn, a number-plate mount, an emergency brake flash and a speed restriction to 45 km/h (28 mph). That is the Light Bee L1E 2026. It weighs 62 kg, three more than the X, and it is type-approved in the L1e-B moped class, which is what lets it be registered with the DVLA.
It is priced at £4,499 including VAT in Black, Blue, Purple or Silver, and it comes with the certificate of conformity you need to register it.

2. What changed for the Light Bee L1E 2026
The headline is the powertrain. The new mid-mounted motor lifts peak output to 10 kW and the battery moves to 72 V, so the L1E pulls harder off the line and holds its 28 mph on hills that slowed the older 60 V bike. The brakes gain forged four-piston callipers, the wheelie control has two levels, and the bike connects to the Sur-Ron app through a T-Box for ride data and location.
- 10 kW motor and 72 V 35 Ah battery – the same as the 2026 Light Bee X.
- Four-piston forged callipers with an emergency brake flash.
- Two-level wheelie control and the Sur-Ron app via T-Box.
- Four colours: Black, Blue, Purple, Silver.
- Certificate of conformity supplied for DVLA registration.
The figures below are Sur-Ron UK’s published MY26 specification for the Light Bee L1E. They are the numbers to check any other listing against.
- Motor: 10 kW peak, 295 Nm at the rear wheel
- Top speed: 28 mph (45 km/h), restricted for the L1e moped class
- Battery: 72 V 35 Ah lithium-ion (2.5 kWh), removable, 20–80% in 2.15 hours
- Range: up to 75 km (46.6 miles) at 24.9 mph
- Weight: 62 kg kerb, 100 kg carrying capacity
- Seat height: 830 mm
- Suspension: 200 mm front fork travel, 85 mm rear shock travel
- Wheels: 19″ front and 18″ rear with off-road-rated tyres
- Brakes: forged four-piston callipers with emergency brake flash
- Road kit: LED headlight, tail and brake light, indicators, mirrors, horn, number-plate mount

- Colours: Black, Blue, Purple, Silver
3. Who can ride a Light Bee L1E 2026
The L1E is an L1e-B moped in legal terms, which puts it in the AM licence category. At 16 you can ride it on a provisional licence with a CBT certificate and L-plates, without a pillion. A full car licence issued before 1 February 2001 carries full moped entitlement, so older riders need no CBT; a full A1, A2 or A licence covers it too. The 45 km/h (28 mph) restriction is what keeps it in that class – and what keeps insurance cheap.
GOV.UK sets out the licence rules in full. In practice the L1E is bought by three groups: sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds who want to ride to college and to the trail, adults who want a silent commuter that doubles as a weekend off-roader, and riders who simply do not want to trailer a bike to every ride.
4. Registering a Light Bee L1E 2026
A new L1E has to be registered with the DVLA before it can be ridden on the road. It is a paperwork exercise rather than a difficult one.
- Order the bike and tell us it is for road use; we prepare the certificate of conformity (CoC) with the invoice.
- Apply for a provisional licence if you do not already hold one (from 15 years 9 months, to ride at 16).
- Book and pass a CBT – one day, no test at the end, valid for two years. Skip this step if you hold a full motorcycle licence or a car licence issued before February 2001.
- Arrange insurance using the frame number on the invoice; you need it in place before the bike can be taxed.
- Register the bike with the DVLA: form V55/4 for a new vehicle, the CoC, proof of identity, the £55 first registration fee and the first year’s tax (£27). The V5C and registration number follow by post.
- Fit the number plate and, if you are on a CBT, L-plates front and rear. Then ride.
We supply the certificate of conformity with the invoice and can talk you through the V55/4 if you have not registered a new vehicle before.

5. What the Light Bee L1E 2026 costs to own
What it really costs to own a Light Bee L1E over a year, beyond the purchase price:
| Cost | Light Bee L1E |
|---|---|
| Bike | £4,499 inc. VAT |
| Delivery / collection | £19.99 within 150 miles / free |
| Registration | DVLA first registration fee; we supply the certificate of conformity |
| Vehicle tax | £27 a year – the lowest motorcycle band (electric exemption ended April 2025) |
| Insurance | Typically far cheaper than a geared 125 |
| Electricity per full charge | Well under £1 |
| Servicing | Pads, chain, sprockets, tyres, lights, torque check |
Electricity is the whole fuel bill: the 72 V 35 Ah pack charges from 20% to 80% in about 2.15 hours from a normal socket for well under a pound, and the battery lifts out so it can charge indoors. There is no oil, no clutch and no air filter; servicing is pads, chain, sprockets, tyres, lights and a torque check.
6. Light Bee L1E 2026 vs Light Bee X
| Light Bee X 2026 | Light Bee L1E 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From £3,295 | £4,499 |
| Peak power / torque | 10 kW / 295 Nm | 10 kW / 295 Nm |
| Top speed | 50 mph | 28 mph (45 km/h, restricted) |
| Weight | 59 kg | 62 kg |
| Road legal | No | Yes – L1e moped, ride from 16 with a CBT |
| Lights, indicators, mirrors | No | Yes, plus horn and plate mount |
| Best for | Tracks, trails, private land | Commuting plus weekend trails |
If the bike will only ever see tracks and private land, the Light Bee X is cheaper, lighter and unrestricted. If you need to ride on the road – to college, to work, to the trail – the Light Bee L1E 2026 is the only Sur-Ron under 17 that can. Off the road it is every bit as capable as the X, with the same long-travel suspension.
7. Riding the Light Bee L1E 2026 off-road too
The L1E is not a compromised trail bike. Same 200 mm forks, same 85 mm rear shock travel, same 19/18 wheels with off-road-rated tyres, same forged frame. The 28 mph restriction is rarely a limit on a trail, and the wheelie control has two levels so you can dial it back for loose ground. Because it is registered, you can also use it on green lanes and byways that are legally roads – something no off-road Sur-Ron can do.
The near-silent motor is a real advantage when it comes to venues. Tracks close to housing that limit petrol sessions will often run extra electric sessions, and a landowner who would never allow a two-stroke on the farm will frequently say yes to a bike that makes no more noise than a mountain bike. Ask, and take the answer in writing if it is not a formal venue.

8. Buying a Light Bee L1E 2026
- Tell us which Light Bee L1E you want – online through the listing, by WhatsApp, or in person.
- Decide whether you want it delivered (our van covers 150 miles from Coalville for £19.99) or whether you will collect it for free.
- Settle the invoice by bank transfer, using the details we email you, or in crypto if you prefer.
- Leave the rest to the workshop: inspection, charge, torque check, then a delivery date or a “ready to collect” message, all inside 24 hours of payment clearing.
If you would rather secure a bike now and pay the balance a little later, our reservation plan lets you hold a Light Bee L1E with a 50% deposit. There is no credit application and no waiting for a decision: you pay half, the bike comes off sale, and the remaining 50% is paid before delivery or collection on a date agreed with you.
Ready for a Light Bee L1E 2026?
Check colours and stock on the product page, or message us and we will confirm availability, a delivery date and what you need to register it.
Why buy from us rather than a marketplace listing? Because a bike is only as good as the aftercare. Our Coalville workshop sees Sur-Rons every day, holds genuine Light Bee L1E parts on the shelf and handles warranty work directly. You get a real invoice with serial numbers for your insurer, a bike that has actually been checked, and someone to phone when you have a question.
There is no call centre and no ticket queue. Message us on WhatsApp, email contact@surronebike.org or visit the showroom Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and the person answering has probably built the bike you are asking about.

Light Bee L1E 2026: first ride and hand-over
Whether you collect or we deliver, the hand-over is the same: battery in and out, charger connected, ride modes explained, seat set for the rider, paperwork in your hand. Ask anything then or on WhatsApp afterwards; the person who answers is the person who checked the bike.
- Read the ride-mode and battery sections of the manual – it takes ten minutes.
- Start in the lowest mode on open ground with no obstacles.
- Practise stopping: the front brake is powerful and the bike is light.
- Keep the first sessions short and finish before the rider is tired.
- Check the bolts after the first few rides; new bikes settle.
The showroom and workshop are in Coalville, Leicestershire (LE67 2QE), ten minutes from junction 22 of the M1 and close to the M42, which puts Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Birmingham within forty minutes and London, Manchester, Sheffield and Bristol within about two hours. We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with parking outside the door. Book a visit and we will have the bike you are interested in ready to sit on.
Light Bee L1E 2026 jargon
A few terms that come up in every conversation about these bikes:
- PDI – pre-delivery inspection: the checks a dealer makes before the bike leaves.
- Big Wheel / Small Wheel – the two Hyper Bee wheel formats, 14/12 and 12/10 inches.
- Ride modes – selectable power levels; Mode 1 is the gentlest.
- EAPC – electrically assisted pedal cycle, the 250 W legal e-bike category the Sur-Ron range is not part of.
- L1e – the EU/UK moped vehicle class; the Light Bee L1E is type-approved in it.
- Grey import – a bike bought abroad and shipped privately, usually without a UK warranty.
- Certificate of conformity – the document needed to register a type-approved bike with the DVLA.
- Energy recovery – regenerative braking that puts charge back into the battery on a closed throttle.
Light Bee L1E 2026 vs the rest of the range
Where the Light Bee L1E 2026 sits among the four 2026 Sur-Rons:
| Hyper Bee | Light Bee X | Light Bee L1E | Ultra Bee HP | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rider | Children and small adults | Teenagers and adults | Road riders from 16 | Experienced adults |
| Torque | 185 Nm | 295 Nm | 295 Nm | 520 Nm |
| Battery | 58 V 22 Ah | 72 V 35 Ah | 72 V 35 Ah | 74 V 60 Ah |
| Top speed | 40 mph | 50 mph | 28 mph (restricted) | 59 mph |
| Price | £2,995 | From £3,295 | £4,499 | From £5,999 |
Maintenance is minimal by design. Brake pads, chain tension, sprockets, tyres and a torque check are the whole routine, and our workshop will do an annual check while you wait if you would rather not. A charge of the 72 V 35 Ah battery takes about 2.15 hours from 20% to 80% and costs well under a pound.
Treat the battery like a phone you care about: room-temperature charging, no long periods completely flat, half charge for storage. Every Light Bee L1E battery we have seen fail early had been left empty in a cold shed for months; every one that has been looked after is still going strong.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Light Bee L1E 2026 road legal in the UK?
Yes. It is type-approved as an L1e moped and can be registered, taxed and insured. We supply the certificate of conformity.
What licence do I need for the Light Bee L1E 2026?
From 16, a provisional licence plus a CBT with L-plates. A full car licence issued before February 2001 or any full motorcycle licence also covers it.
How fast is the Light Bee L1E 2026?
28 mph (45 km/h), restricted as part of the moped class. Power and torque are the same 10 kW and 295 Nm as the Light Bee X.
How much is the Light Bee L1E 2026?
£4,499 including VAT at Surron E-Bikes in Black, Blue, Purple or Silver. Delivery £19.99 within 150 miles of Coalville, collection free.
How much is road tax on a Light Bee L1E?
£27 a year at the time of writing – the lowest motorcycle band. Electric bikes stopped being tax-exempt in April 2025.
Can I derestrict the L1E?
Not legally. Removing the restriction takes it outside its type approval and makes it illegal on the road. Buy the Light Bee X if you want the full 50 mph off-road.
How far does the L1E go on a charge?
Up to 75 km (46.6 miles) at 24.9 mph. A commute and a weekend trail ride on one charge is realistic.
Does the L1E come registered?
It comes with the certificate of conformity; registration is done with the DVLA using form V55/4, and we can talk you through it.
