Most people who buy Light Bee L1E were about to buy a petrol 50 cc moped or a restricted 125. They end up with something quicker off the line, almost silent, far cheaper to run and able to ride a trail at the weekend – for a price that is higher up front and lower every month after. This guide gives six honest reasons for choosing the L1E over petrol, then covers price, licence and how to order.
It is written by Surron E-Bikes, an authorised Sur-Ron dealer in Coalville, Leicestershire. The Light Bee L1E product page has live colours and stock.

Reason 1 – It costs pence to run
A petrol moped drinks a litre of fuel every 30–40 miles. The L1E charges its 72 V 35 Ah battery from a normal socket in about 2.15 hours (20–80%) for well under a pound and goes up to 75 km on it. There is no oil, no filters, no spark plug, no clutch and no exhaust. Vehicle tax is the lowest band, £27 a year, and insurance sits in the cheapest class. When you buy Light Bee L1E you are buying a bike whose monthly running cost is mostly the electricity.
Budget for the following and nothing else:
| Cost | Light Bee L1E |
|---|---|
| Bike | £4,499 inc. VAT |
| Delivery / collection | £19.99 within 150 miles / free |
| Registration | DVLA first registration fee; we supply the certificate of conformity |
| Vehicle tax | £27 a year – the lowest motorcycle band (electric exemption ended April 2025) |
| Insurance | Typically far cheaper than a geared 125 |
| Electricity per full charge | Well under £1 |
| Servicing | Pads, chain, sprockets, tyres, lights, torque check |

Reason 2 – It is quicker where it matters
Both a 50 cc moped and the L1E are restricted to 45 km/h, so the top speed is a draw. Everything below it is not. The L1E’s 10 kW motor makes 295 Nm at the rear wheel from a standstill, so it reaches its 28 mph limit in a fraction of the time a 50 cc two-stroke does and holds it on hills that leave a petrol moped wheezing. In traffic that is the difference between leading the queue and being in it.
| Light Bee L1E 2026 | Typical petrol 50 cc moped | |
|---|---|---|
| Peak power | 10 kW (13.4 hp) | 2–3 kW (3–4 hp) |
| Torque at the wheel | 295 Nm | A fraction of that |
| Top speed | 28 mph (restricted) | 28 mph (restricted) |
| Noise | Near silent | Loud |
| Weight | 62 kg | 80–100 kg |
| Fuel per 100 km | Under £1 of electricity | £4–£6 of petrol |
Reason 3 – It is silent
The only sound is the chain. That matters more than it seems: neighbours do not notice a 6am start, tracks near housing welcome it, and landowners who would refuse a two-stroke will say yes to it. It is also less tiring to ride for an hour, and it lets you hear the traffic around you.
Reason 4 – Servicing is brake pads and a chain
Owning a Light Bee L1E costs a fraction of running a petrol equivalent. The 72 V 35 Ah pack charges in about 2.15 hours from 20% to 80% from a normal socket for pennies, and there is no engine oil, no air filter, no valve clearances and no clutch to replace. What wears is brake pads, the chain and sprockets and tyres – stocked in our Light Bee L1E parts range.
Battery care is the whole maintenance story. Keep it between roughly 20% and 80% when it is not being used, do not charge it while it is still hot from a hard ride, and never leave it empty over winter. Do that and the pack will hold its capacity for years.
Our workshop recommends a first check after the initial few rides and then a service each season. There is no valve clearance, no carburettor and no oil change to pay for, and we stock genuine parts for the whole Light Bee family.
Reason 5 – It rides trails at the weekend
No petrol moped can follow the L1E off the road. It has the Light Bee X’s forged frame, 200 mm forks, 85 mm rear shock, 19/18 wheels and off-road tyres, plus two-level wheelie control for loose ground. Ride to the trail, ride the trail, ride home – and because it is registered, green lanes that are legally roads are open to it as well.

Where do people actually ride? Three places, mostly: their own or a friend’s land, a pay-and-play venue, and a practice track or club. The first is free but needs permission; the second costs a day fee and provides marked routes and marshals; the third adds coaching and racing. Phone any venue before you go to confirm it takes electric bikes and the rider’s age.
Reason 6 – It holds its value
A registered, dealer-supplied L1E with its V5C, certificate of conformity and a healthy battery sells quickly, because sixteen-year-olds get their licence every year and parents would rather buy a bike with paperwork. Petrol mopeds depreciate faster and are harder to sell once they have a few thousand noisy miles on them. Look after the battery and keep the paperwork, and the L1E you buy today is an easy sale in three years.
Buy Light Bee L1E: price, licence and what is included
The 2026 L1E is £4,499 including VAT at Surron E-Bikes in Black, Blue, Purple or Silver. That includes the certificate of conformity, a UK charger, a pre-delivery inspection and a manufacturer warranty handled in our workshop. Van delivery is £19.99 within 150 miles of Coalville; collection is free; a 50% deposit reserves a bike.
Because it is a moped rather than a motorcycle, the licence bar is low: 16 years old, a provisional licence and a one-day CBT. There is no theory test and no practical test unless you want to remove the L-plates later. Riders with a car licence from before February 2001, or any full motorcycle licence, can ride it straight away.
- Buy the bike from a dealer who supplies the certificate of conformity – without it the DVLA will not register it.
- Sort the licence: provisional plus CBT from 16, or an existing full car (pre-2001) or motorcycle licence.
- Insure it, tax it and register it – V55/4, CoC, ID, £55 fee, £27 tax – and wait for the V5C.
- Plate it, L-plate it if required, and keep the CBT certificate with the paperwork.

Surron E-Bikes is an authorised Sur-Ron dealer with a showroom and workshop in Coalville, Leicestershire, ten minutes off the M1. Every bike we sell is UK-supplied, pre-delivery inspected by our own technicians, and covered by a manufacturer warranty that is handled here rather than by posting parts abroad. We also carry one of the largest genuine Sur-Ron parts ranges in the country, so servicing and upgrades happen in one place.
We are also a third-party webshop that stocks selected products from other brands with their consent, which is why you will see more than one name in the catalogue. For the bikes themselves, though, the process is the same: one price, one workshop, one point of contact on WhatsApp or email.
Buy Light Bee L1E: questions we get asked
- “Should I buy Light Bee L1E or a 125?” A 125 is faster on the road but needs an A1 test at 17; the L1E is ridable at 16 on a CBT and costs pence to run.
- “Can I buy Light Bee L1E and derestrict it?” Not for road use – it would leave its type approval. Buy the X for unrestricted off-road riding.
- “How long does the battery last?” Years, if it is charged indoors and never stored flat.
- “Where can I buy Light Bee L1E with a UK warranty?” From an authorised dealer such as Surron E-Bikes; imports rarely come with one.
- “Is it waterproof?” Sealed motor and controller; rinse it after muddy rides and keep the battery indoors.

The wider licence rules are on GOV.UK.

Contact us first so we can have the right colour on the floor.
Jargon, translated:
- Energy recovery – regenerative braking that puts charge back into the battery on a closed throttle.
- Certificate of conformity – the document needed to register a type-approved bike with the DVLA.
- Grey import – a bike bought abroad and shipped privately, usually without a UK warranty.
- L1e – the EU/UK moped vehicle class; the Light Bee L1E is type-approved in it.
- EAPC – electrically assisted pedal cycle, the 250 W legal e-bike category the Sur-Ron range is not part of.
- Ride modes – selectable power levels; Mode 1 is the gentlest.
- Big Wheel / Small Wheel – the two Hyper Bee wheel formats, 14/12 and 12/10 inches.
- PDI – pre-delivery inspection: the checks a dealer makes before the bike leaves.
Buy Light Bee L1E or another Sur-Ron?
If you buy Light Bee L1E you are choosing the only road-legal bike in the range. Here is how it compares with the other three.
| Bike | Peak power | Weight | Range | Road legal | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hyper Bee 2026 | 8 kW | 39 kg | 56 km | No | £2,995 |
| Light Bee X 2026 | 10 kW | 59 kg | 75 km | No | From £3,295 |
| Light Bee L1E 2026 | 10 kW | 62 kg | 75 km | Yes – L1e moped | £4,499 |
| Ultra Bee HP 2026 | 24.5 kW | 88.5 kg | 115 km | HP T only | From £5,999 |
The Ultra Bee HP T is also road legal, but as an A1-class motorcycle it needs a different licence and costs £6,295; for a 16-year-old or a commuter the L1E is the sensible one.
Frequently asked questions
Why buy Light Bee L1E instead of a petrol moped?
Lower running costs, far more torque, silence, minimal servicing, real off-road ability and stronger resale. The trade-off is a higher purchase price.
How much is the Light Bee L1E?
£4,499 including VAT at Surron E-Bikes. Delivery £19.99 within 150 miles of Coalville, collection free, 50% deposit option.
What licence do I need?
From 16, a provisional licence plus a CBT with L-plates; or a full car licence issued before February 2001; or any full motorcycle licence.
Is the L1E restricted?
Yes, to 45 km/h (28 mph) as part of the L1e moped class. Derestricting it makes it illegal on the road.
How far does it go on a charge?
Up to 75 km (46.6 miles). A daily commute plus a weekend ride on one charge is realistic.
Does it need a CoC to register?
Yes. We supply the certificate of conformity with the invoice; the DVLA needs it with form V55/4.
Can I buy Light Bee L1E with a deposit?
Yes. 50% reserves a specific bike; the balance is paid before delivery or collection.
Is the L1E good off-road?
Yes. It shares the Light Bee X’s suspension, wheels and frame, with two-level wheelie control.
Is it cheaper to buy Light Bee L1E than a petrol moped over three years?
Usually, yes. The higher purchase price is offset by fuel savings of several hundred pounds a year, minimal servicing and stronger resale.
Can I buy Light Bee L1E online?
Yes. Order on the product page, pay by bank transfer or crypto, and we deliver in our own van with the certificate of conformity.
